Trayvon Martin’s mother on Wednesday told hundreds of protesters demanding an arrest in the shooting death of the unarmed Florida teen by a neighbourhood watch captain that “this is not about a black and white thing. This is about a wrong and right thing.”

Sybrina Fulton spoke to demonstrators at what organizers called “A Million Hoodies March” at a New York park about her son’s slaying last month by watch volunteer George Zimmerman in the gated community of Sanford, Florida. Martin was wearing a hoodie at the time of his death.

I saw this chart on HuffPo, detailing the late response of the national media to the Trayvon Martin death. You often cite encouraging dialogue as motive for your charts, and the case is rife with dialogue about racial profiling, vigilantism, and gun laws.

If you are unfamiliar with the case, part of me is envious, because it has been eating away at the part of my brain that holds out hope for humanity and the ability to be empathetic to those with differing world views for weeks. However, please do risk your bliss by reading up and consider signing this petition.

An online call for peace initiated by an Israeli couple has managed to achieve the support of 1,000 Israelis and Iranians. And it all began with two posters.

“I thought that when you’re constantly surrounded by talk of threats and war, you are so stressed and afraid that you crawl into a sort of shell and think to yourself how lucky we are to also have bombs and how lucky we are that we’ll clean them out first,” [Ronny Edry, who began the campaign with his wife] said. “So I thought, ‘Why not try to reach the other side; to bypass the generals and see if they [Iranians] really hate me?’”

At first, the posters were castigated, said Edry. “After the first poster people started criticizing me, saying I’m an idiot, that I’m naïve. ‘Why are you telling them you love them? Why are you giving up before the war has even started?’” But very quickly the posters became a hit: the first image gained hundreds of “Likes” and “Shares,” and numerous people asked to join the initiative.

It was not long before reactions from Iranians began trickling through. “I never imagined that within 48 hours I would be speaking to the other side,” said Edry, who explained that most of the Iranians’ messages had been coming through in private, but that there had been some who invited him to be their Facebook friend.

The bottom 90 percent of Americans lost $127, the bottom 99 percent of Americans gained $80, and the top 1 percent gained $105,637. The bottom 99 percent is net positive for the year due to around $125 in average capital gains. They can take comfort in efforts by the right to set the capital gains tax to 0 percent, which would have netted them an additional couple dozen bucks.

(Also, just to show “the top 1 percent captured 93 percent of the income gains in the first year of recovery” isn’t some sort of stats juke, you can take $105,637 and divide it by the the number you get when you add $80 times 99 to $105,637 times 1. That number is 93 percent, which is the share of income gains the 1 percent took home.)

Here’s Dirk Barnett, Newsweek & The Daily Beast’s Creative Director:

Every week we produce anywhere from 10-20 different cover ideas until we settle on what works best or as the story develops, so at the end of each week we wind up with a proverbial wastebasket full of scrapped concepts.

The week’s cover, “The Politics of Sex,” is a perfect example to kick this off. These directions are a combination of ideas generated in-house and commissions to various illustrators, designers, studios, ad agencies, etc. This week, we tapped the creative minds at ad agency Hill Holiday and the design studio Dress Code, as well as renowned book designer Rodrigo Corral.
